Huawei’s new phones will not come with Google apps

Ever since the US blacklisted Huawei, we knew it wouldn’t be a smooth ride for the company. The upcoming Huawei phones - Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro, are to launch in a couple of weeks, but it seems the phones won’t be coming with Google play store and Google apps. Google confirmed this by saying that it is unable to grant the license of its apps to Huawei due to the US ban. So this means that users won’t be able to access their favourite apps such as Youtube, Google maps and the likes. However, the new phones will still be able to run Android, an open-source software. Huawei has been working on its own play store and operating system (Harmony OS) for quite a while, almost as if it envisaged these events. But the truth is, using a phone without google services will be limiting.

You can now sign into Google with your Fingerprint

Google has rolled out an update that now lets users log into its web services using fingerprint based verification instead of a password. The feature is built on a “FIDO2” standards, W3C WebAuthn and FIDO CTAP, and are designed to provide simpler and more secure authentication experiences. The benefit of Google’s authentication feature is that it allows the same credentials be used by both native apps and web services. This means you only need to register your fingerprint with a google service once and it will work on both apps and web services To register your fingerprint, open google chrome and access passwords.google.com. Once on the site, you will be required to authenticate your identity using your phone’s fingerprint sensor. However, you can still decide to sign into google services using other authentication methods – pin, password or pattern. The update will be available to all Pixel devices and devices running on Android 7 (Nougat) operating system and above. But your phone must have a fingerprint verification functionality for this to work.

Facebook hired contractors to transcribe people’s voice messages on Messenger

Facebook is at it again, intruding and violating user’s privacy seems to be what the company is really good at. News is that the company had been paying contractors to listen to and transcribe user’s voice chats on Facebook messenger. The contract employees when queried, claimed they were ordered to transcribe audio messages but were not told where and how the audio was obtained and why they were hired to do so. According to Bloomberg, the company confirmed it had been transcribing users’ audio and said it will no longer do so, following scrutiny into other companies. “Much like Apple and Google, we paused human review of audio more than a week ago,” the company said Tuesday. The company said the users who were affected chose the option in Facebook’s Messenger app to have their voice chats transcribed. The contractors were checking whether Facebook’s artificial intelligence correctly interpreted the messages, which were anonymized. Mark Zuckerberg had previously denied this and called it “conspiracy theory” that his company was collecting audio from users to inform ads or help determine what people see in their news feeds. Now, the company admitted it “only accesses users’ microphone if the user has given the app permission and if they are actively using a specific feature that requires audio (like voice messaging features.). But even with this, we know Facebook never disclosed to users that third parties may review their audio chats.
